Which Direction Are We Going?
The sign read, “Without geography, you’re nowhere.”
A few weeks ago, my wife and I were traveling in Dublin, Ireland. During a visit to Trinity College — where we had the privilege of viewing the remarkable Book of Kells — we passed that sign outside the geography building. It stopped me. It wasn’t just clever, it was instructive.
As school leaders, we are constantly navigating complex terrain: governance challenges, strategic decisions, and the ever-present responsibility of shaping the future of our schools. And like any journey, direction matters. Without clarity, without the right tools and reference points, we risk drifting rather than leading with purpose.
Geography provides orientation. It gives us a framework for understanding where we are and where we want to go. But geography alone doesn’t provide you with a plan for getting to where you want to go.
Standing before the Book of Kells, I was reminded of the enduring power of a well-crafted book. Books inform, challenge, and inspire. They sharpen our thinking, deepen our self-awareness, and renew our sense of purpose. They illuminate places we have not yet been and guide us on how to get to where we are called to go.
That is the intent behind the new edition of Healthy Boards, Successful Schools.
My hope is that it becomes a trusted guide for school leaders and board members — a resource to turn to when facing complex situations that demand both strategic thinking and best practices. A roadmap that brings a path where there is uncertainty, and direction where there may be drift.
Because the stakes are too high for anything less.
The future of independent and faith-based schools is not simply about survival, it is about flourishing. And without strong, intentional leadership, there can be neither excellence nor lasting success.
